In comparison with the country as a
whole, the economy of Apulia is
characterised by a greater emphasis
on agriculture and services and a
smaller part played by industry.
During the last 20 years highly
specialised areas have developed in
Apoulia, producing on a scale not only
of domestic but also of international
significance. A major contribution to
the competitiveness of the region's
economy stems from the existence of
important universitires adn R&D
centres.
The tertiary sector which includes
trade, tourism and other services;
alone represents 50% of the regional
total, however, the incidence of the
agricultural sector is still quite high
(27%), although it is declining in the
past five years. The main agricultural
products in the region are olive oil,
durum wheat, tomatoes and wine.
The Region of Puglia (administrative
organisation) participates in IRMA via
the the Agricultural Development
Service and Assocodipuglia.
